This is my first year raising a few monarch caterpillars. When I had first thrown the leaves into their habitat, they dried out pretty quickly. I thought there must be another way - of course there was! The peg rack and “fat cat” tubes are perfect for keeping milkweed leaves or stems fresher than a few hours. Usually I had to get rid of mostly fresh leaves simply due to the amount of frass. I’m now in the chrysalis watch phase and very excited - thanks to these ingenious accessories! Bravo! 👏
I love the peg racks and tubes! Before buying these, I was putting a milkweed plant in my cages. Keeping the plants sufficiently watered without damaging caterpillars was difficult. The peg racks and tubes work perfectly to keep enough watered, milkweed stems for the hungry caterpillars to eat. So glad I found these and purchased them!
I bought a flag for myself and one for my cousin. The fabric is great, not nylon, and will be able to withstand the outside elements easily. The flag adds an extra touch to the native plant bed in my front yard.
The caterpillar cage provides a perfect environment for the larvae to mature, and ultimately a spacious environment for the adults to emerge (with the cage door open, they can fly away upon emerging). The cage is well constructed and works well for me.
I have 4 of these cubes and plan to buy more. I have many different sizes of cubes but find these are the most manageable in separating the different instars of monarchs and eastern black swallowtails I raise.
