Butterfly Cages

  • BE CAREFUL when opening the Big Cube, Tall Baby, and Monarch Tower cages- after you slip off the elastic strap from around the circle, the cage can pop open unexpectedly so make sure you have plenty of space and no breakable objects close by
  • After opening your cage, the PVC side will be creased from folding. Get the creases out quickly by blow drying the PVC with a hair dryer for about 5 minutes, or place PVC toward warm sun to relax wrinkles:
  • Always close the cage door so the zippers meet at the TOP CENTER. If a caterpillar is somewhere on the zipper, this will allow you to zip down the other side to open.
  • Green Side of the cage is the floor
  • Clean the cage at season's end or after a disease outbreak by soaking it in a 5% bleach solution (19 parts water to 1 part bleach) for about 20 minutes. The cage can be soaked in a tub or laundry tub OR
  • Clean the cage by spraying it down in cube form with a 5% bleach solution in a spray bottle or garden sprayer
  • Rinse your cage with water and then let it sun dry- hang it on a clothesline or put a rock on the floor so it won't blow away
  • When folding the cage for storage, place your hands on opposite upper corners of the cage and press one corner in to fold the cage flat.
  • Store the cage flat in a closet, behind a couch, under bed, etc...

Floral Tubes?

Check out this blog post to see how to use the floral tubes to keep fresh for monarch caterpillars:

How to Feed Monarch Caterpillars with Milkweed Cuttings

Please keep the water picks (floral tubes) away from small children, as the sharp picks could cause an injury.

Poo Poo Platter

The poo poo platter fits snugly inside the baby cube so that all floor space can be utilized and to encourage caterpillars to crawl up the cage walls instead of under the rim of the platter.

If a caterpillar makes a chrysalis on the rim of the platter, wait at least 24 hours for the chrysalis to dry, then remove and rehang the chrysalis

Insert and remove the platter by slightly bending both sides to the center as shown in this photo:
