Last spring, while our family was under “house arrest” (thank you - Covid-19), I wandered off for a drive in the country one afternoon and happened upon a patch of milkweeds COVERED in caterpillars - MONARCH caterpillars!!! I sped off to my house, grabbed a bucket, shovel, some nets and gloves. Went back to the location of my “treasure”, dug up milkweed plants and retrieved over 20 caterpillars . Brought my treasures home and set them up in two aquariums (one for each of my sons homes - each home has two children). To my delight EVERYBODY were privileged to watch (in AWE) the “process”. We only lost 3 caterpillars out of the 20. We had two “release parties”. It was awesome for this 68 yr old MiMi to replicate an experiment in science that some dear teacher of my youth conducted in my class room in the 60’s. My new and MUCH LARGER “net cages” are ready and waiting for MiMi to go “milkweed and caterpillar” hunting in the next few days. My grand kiddos are already anticipating the fun of the MONARCH MIRACLES that we all get to witness again this spring. SO glad I found these beautiful net cages. Both my youngest grand daughters (upon opening the packages) unzipped the cages and crawled in (they are both 9). Adorable.
